How do I secure my home router?
Change the default admin password, use modern Wi-Fi encryption, keep firmware updated and check the list of connected devices.
Your router is the front door to every device in the house. A few settings changes make it far harder for anyone uninvited to get in.
The essentials
- Change the admin password. This is the login for the router’s settings, separate from the Wi-Fi password.
- Use strong encryption. Choose the newest WPA option your devices support.
- Set a long Wi-Fi password. A passphrase of several random words works well.
- Update the firmware. Turn on automatic updates if offered.
Good extras
- Turn off WPS push-button pairing and remote management if you do not use them.
- Create a guest network for visitors and smart gadgets.
- Review connected devices and remove any you do not recognize.
Menus differ by router, so check your model’s manual. Then see the full network fixes.
